The more informative and interesting the content is, the more likely people are going to come back. It is like opening a shop and luring customers to you. The content that you write must have commerical or informative value, so that Google will display the most relevant ads on your page.
The second most important thing you should do is to get noticed, get more people to link to you, you should link to more people so that you can get a larger audience and a better page rank at Google, so that you website shows up in the 1st page of search results.
